The Invicta Dynamos were shutout by the Chelmsford Chieftains at the Riverside on Sunday evening as the Essex outfit claimed the points in a ‘dead rubber’ match-up in the ENIHL Southern Cup.
With Romford having already lifted the trophy, there was only pride at stake as the Dynamos travelled across the Thames to the home of the Chieftains to face Chelmsford.
They would take to the ice minus Callum Fowler and Grant Baxter and, despite outshooting their opponents by 33 shots to 27, would eventually succumb to a 5-0 defeat.
In the opening frame the home side raced into a two goal lead with James Ayling and Tom Long both firing beyond netminder Andy Moffat for the 2-0 edge with twenty minutes gone.
That advantage was then extended in the second as Chelmsford continued to prove the more clinical in front of net. Darren Brown took the Chieftains’ tally to three before former Oxford forward Darren Elliott added another to make it 4-0 ahead of the buzzer.
In the final period the hosts then added one more as Alex Green added his name to the scorers on the game sheet with a well taken shot beyond Andy Moffat. Meanwhile the Dynamos struggled to find a way beyond goalie Ben Clements with the shot stopper in stubborn form and in no mood to give-up a shutout.
Come the final buzzer it was a 5-0 victory for the home side then with the visitors losing out in Chelmsford for the third time this season.
So it was defeat for the Dynamos but no damage was done with the tie a mere formality in a tournament where the top prize has already been claimed. Head Coach Kevin Parrish would undoubtedly have liked a momentum retaining victory in Essex but attention will instead now turn to the more important league match-up against the Streatham Redskins on Sunday in Gillingham next weekend.
Man of the match awards on the night went to shutout hero Ben Clements of the Chieftains whilst Callum Best took the honours for the Dynamos for the second time in as many nights.
